Colorado CD1 GOP Sees $250 Million D.O.G.E. Cut As Start of Fiscally Responsible Federal Reductions For The State

DENVER, CO — Today, the Colorado Congressional District 1 (CD1) Republican Party voices serious concerns over the state’s worsening fiscal situation following the recent termination of $250 million in federal funding for Colorado. Enacted by “Department of Government Efficiency” (D.O.G.E), this cut targets COVID-related grants, exacerbating an already strained Colorado State budget grappling with a $1.2 billion shortfall. The CD1 GOP warns that this may only be the beginning of federal cuts as Colorado legislators and the City of Denver persist in obstructing federal immigration enforcement efforts through their sanctuary policies.

According to the CPR News article by Bente Birkeland, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have ended $250 million in ongoing and planned grants, allocated initially under the American Rescue Plan Act passed during the COVID crisis.

The $250 million cut is an additional blow to Colorado’s fiscal stability and the well-being of our residents and may be the tip of the iceberg. The Trump administration has made it clear that states and cities standing in the way of immigration enforcement, like Colorado and Denver with their sanctuary policies, will face consequences. Denver’s refusal to cooperate with federal authorities, alongside Colorado’s Safe and Inclusive Communities Act, is putting our state in the crosshairs for further funding reductions. With Denver’s policies discouraging police from engaging in immigration enforcement and the state’s laws limiting cooperation with ICE, Colorado risks losing additional federal support beyond these cuts.

Colorado lawmakers are already scrambling to address a $1.2 billion budget shortfall, and now they face an additional $250 million hole with no capacity to backfill. As federal tax dollars start to be withheld—the consequences of unfettered spending by Democratic legislators over the past several years continue to grow. The state’s sanctuary stance is jeopardizing our fiscal health and the safety net for the citizens of Colorado.

The CD1 GOP calls on state and local leaders to reconsider their sanctuary policies in light of this state’s growing budget crisis. We cannot afford to lose more federal funding over ideological battles. Denver and Colorado must work with the federal government, not against it, to maintain the resources our state desperately needs. Without a course change, we risk further cuts that could devastate our state’s economy.

The Colorado CD1 GOP stands ready to engage with constituents and policymakers to address this escalating crisis and urges immediate action to protect Colorado’s fiscal future.
